Where does the name Zaar come from?
Antiques by Zaar is owned by Ruth and Mark Olbrych who have three children; Zachary, Arianna and Avery…the ZAA of Zaar. Ruth finishes the word. Mark is credited for the idea of the name. (The business logo translates as Ruth’s name in Chinese.)
When & how did the Olbrychs get into the business of selling Chinese Antiques?
The passion for all things Chinese was fostered during the Olbrychs 8 years living in Asia. In 1999 when the family was planning their move to the States Mark made a house warming “gift” to Ruth in the form of a small shipment of Chinese antique furniture. If you ask Ruth she’ll say it was a “dry run” for what Mark was plotting for a new business venture? Antiques by Zaar was established as an online business in 2000 for Ruth to run from their home.
What did the Olbrychs do before selling Chinese Antiques?
In Mark’s previous life he worked a job in the international corporate world, in areas of retail, manufacturing, wholesale, sourcing and general management. It was Mark’s work that made for the family’s colorful list of countries of residence which include Haiti, Canada, Thailand and Taiwan, prior to their move to his homeland, the United States.
Ruth’s background is in social services and public relations. She ran a small import business selling Haitian handicrafts (1986-1991) before the family moved to Asia. During their time in Asia Ruth was a full time mother and manager of the household.
Where is the Zaar merchandise purchased?
From the inception of the business Mark has been responsible for purchasing the inventory. Up until 1999 6 45' containers/year were shipped, afterwhich, in response to economic trends, we scaled down on volume purchased, but continue to have fresh infusions available.
Is there a brick and mortar store front for Antiques by Zaar?
The business was established as an online business and it is from the website that the bulk of the business is garnered. If customers choose to see the furniture first hand, visits to their 12,000 square foot warehouse in High Point NC can be made by appointment. Corporate office is housed in the Olbrych Maine residence.
Is there a catalogue available?
In lieu of a traditional paper catalogue the photos offered on the website serve as a base for an “interactive” catalogue. Simple request by phone or email will ensure you are emailed additional photos of as many pieces as you would like to see.
